Topic: Business Startups

gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:31): one of the ladies says she can't get in
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:31): What is it with guys anyway that think you OWE them something? Especially, after they lie to you and treat you like crap?
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:31): Who is it
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:31): who knows
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:32): ?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:32): new gal from Germany
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:32): forgot her password
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:32): It only takes a moment to register. Have her do it over.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:33): She has been waiting since last Monday for a reply
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:34): besides being from Germany the tax situation is different
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:34): so..
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:34): That's odd. A reply to what? Registration?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:34): lost password request
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:35): Taxes aren't going to be an issue today. New startup organizing is what I was going to talk about. Did I change up on you?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:35): lol
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:35): ok
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:35): I don't know what foreign startups are like but I'm pretty sure they're all the same.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:36): I think we might want to do the invite in Skype, since nobody is here yet. What do you think?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:36): there's Carol!
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:36): yeah
(2008/04/09 - 12:36): caroldeckert joined the room
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:36): Hi Carol
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:37): have you met Linda Hall yet?
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:37): Good afternoon! So sorry to be late - my computer is being weird today - keeps booting me off line!
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:37): I know of Linda from Ryze but have not personally met her.
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:37): Hello Linda - welcome!
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:37): seems like everybody is having computer issues lately
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:37): Hi, Carol.

gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:39): :D

gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:44): we are doing intros. Please post yours
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:46): I am working on getting a dimdim room, but it hasn't happened yet.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:46): What's a dimdim room?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:46): audio/video room
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:46): Sounds like something you eat.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:46): I believe it is free
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:46): I know
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:46): like dipsum

CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:47): Dyxlesic?
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:47): LOL
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:47): Katherine do you want to post your introduction and URLs?
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:47): The chat box has a slow response time.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:48): Yeah, Jenn is here
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:48): let me go invite her in
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:48): INTRO: My name is Carol Deckert and I am a Networking Maven (Coach)! I certainly do have a passion - about networking. I love networking, read all the books, emails, ebooks and discussion groups that focus on networking (and marketing) and think it is the most awesome way to grow your business. Please feel free to join me in my Skype networking room - http://www.runlancaster.com/skype-room/networking Referrals are our rainbows and I love to see rainbows! I am a Networking Coach and I help educate business people (owners and other professionals) how to network effectively and efficiently. I offer one-on-one coaching or group coaching and am available as a speaker for various group online and offline. Please visit my website at http://www.runlancaster.com or at my blog at http://www.runlancaster.com/blog Currently I run a face-to-face networking group in Lancaster, PA, meeting weekly. We are an exclusive group (we only allow one member per category/profession) and we learn to know all about one another in order to build those critical business relationships. Without relationships, there is no business. Without people there are no relationships. So building relationships between like-minded people is the best way to get and grow your business. Keep your eyes open for the announcement of the new RUN International – online networking and training membership group opening soon.I'm married to Larry (a USPS Letter Carrier for 35 years); we have been married since 1989 and together for 2 years before that. Together we have 3 children (all grown) and love being empty-nesters! We have 5 awesome grandchildren; Tyler (18); Morgan (14); Ravyn (6); Luke (6) and Shyla (4). Being a grandma is the best title I can have (just don't let that get around too, too much! <g>). Guess I better name the 3 kids, cause without them I wouldn't have those awesome grandkids! Caryn (32), married to Marc; Jason (31) married to Lisa and Amanda (24), a single mom. Having said all that, what can I do to help any of you today?
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:48): This chat today is extremely slow - I'm sorry that took so long!

KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 12:51): I also do parent coaching www.betterparentingcoach.com
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:51): :D
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:51): Is anyone here a new startup or considering a new startup?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:51): I think Linda is ready to get started
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 12:51): no but I help new startups
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:51): no, been in business for 15 years
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 12:51): Sort of. I am considering opening a brick and mortar, but have been on line for 4 years
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:51): I am. But the question was merely curiosity.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:51): Jenn, when you get your intro ready to post just do
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:51): I do come in contact with startups in my coaching practice
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:51): What do you do, Jenn?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:52): Welcome Linda Hall of Cross Country Bookkeeping.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 12:52): the floor is yours
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:52): Thank you, Ginger.
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 12:52): My name is Jenn Brockman, I own and operate both Painted Laydies MIneral makeup www.paintedlaydies.com and Mama Bags. www.mamabags.com . I am also mother to two young girls, one with Autism and one with ADD.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:53): Thanks, Jenn.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:53): I was going to talk about startups and the overwhelming paperwork involved and how to keep organized. Is this a topic that everyone wants to pursue or is there something else you'd like to discuss?
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:54): Whether you're involved in a startup or not, keeping it together can be frustrating and time-consuming. I wanted to see if I can help get things back on track and headed in the right direction.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:55): Is anyone having a problem keeping up with the flow because they're busy doing what they do best?
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:55): I think we are all challenged with that at one time or another
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:56): Sometimes we get overwhelmed with what we are doing that the important organizational things get overlooked
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 12:56): I wish that were the case for me. I have enough time to do my books but need and want to be busier.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:57): Jenn ~is there anything in particular you need help with?
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:58): Basically, this is YOUR time. Please use it however you want. It's hard to find a topic that fits everyone so if you want to discuss issues, this would be a great time to do it.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:58): Has everyone filed their 2007 tax returns?
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 12:58): Not really. I did have a question about putting myself on payroll, or paying myself. But after looking at the finances, I'm not sure there is enough money for it yet.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 12:59): Are you a sole proprietor, Jenn?
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 12:59): LLC
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 12:59): only me
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 12:59): My tax returns are filed, thank goodness!
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 12:59): yep, mine are done
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:00): How are you prospecting clients? Just a question out of curiosity.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:00): Do you have a marketing budget?
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:00): HAh. not well enough.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:00): working on'em
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:00): I know the feeling. <<smile>>
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:01): It takes a while to get where you feel comfortable with the client base you have and can support your needs.
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:01): What little I've done has been online through groups. I did at tone time have a good group of affliates who were pulling in orders but they have all dropped in their sales volume too.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:01): Is it the industry as a whole?
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:01): I would like to market more locally but need the new location in order to really move beyond what I'm doing now.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:02): Have you taken advantage of your website and are you posting a profile at free advertising sites?
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:02): I honestly don't know. Katherine found an example that cosmetics tend to do well in recessions
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:02): Craiglist is great for building a local clientelle
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:03): Craigslist got me a few new clients from the first ad I placed.
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:03): I'm not aware of many advertising site I guess.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:03): I got one
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:03): I am working on my site as I can and as I learn.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:03): Then it seemed like all the bookkeepers in Riverside and San Bernardino county decided to post their ads. <<another smile>>
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:03): lol
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:03): It's tough when the market's flooded. And even tougher when the clientele doesn't know how to interview and who to choose.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:04): very true
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:04): but if you have a 'niche' that sets you apart that helps
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:04): Linda, how do you help your clientele learn to ask those important questions to choose a vendor/supplier?
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:05): In my business, I've learned to do what I call subtle, yet blatant advertising. It still took awhile but far less time than the Yellow Pages.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:05): I have a brick & mortar but I also do online bookkeeping.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:05): I have clients in Florida, Oregan, Massachusetts, and Washington.
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:06): how can you be subtle and blatant at the same time - seems like an oxymoron to me
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:06): I was wondering that too. do you mean coupon advertising?
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:07): Starting the online thing was a totally new experience. Ginger has done all my banners, buttons, etc. and I really believe it's helped generate more interest than my own amateur graphics ever would have.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:07): :)
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:07): Whoohoo Ginger
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:07): we have two car dealerships here. One is just blatant, the other is both subtle and blatant. The difference: the first one just yells and screms and blasts the info. The second, tells you the same information without yelling at you and mentions not doing it like the "other" guys.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:08): Yes. Have you ever heard of Merchants Circle? It's nationwide but you can post coupons that are directed locally as well as nationally.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:08): Thanks Katherine and Linda, I never expected that plug! :D
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:08): I have, and actually joined though I haven't done muc with it
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:08): never heard of them
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:08): online i really do think that social media is the key to success
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:09): me too, and networking!
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:09): Build a profile and start contacting local businesses in your area that are also at Merchants Circle.
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:09): I agree Katherine - social media is the best online marketing you can do.
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:09): Merchant's Circle is another avenue that you really have to be proactive on - it's a very "quiet" avenue - so you need to make your own Noise to be heard
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:09): what is the URL for Merchants Circle?
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:09): networking is the foundation of social media
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:09): gotta love wen2.0
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:09): I love networking. I only joined Ryze a year ago September.
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:09): I can see the potential, but how do you keep from only doing that rather than actually getting orders?
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:09): Yeah, Ginger - Networking - now that REALLY works!
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:09): web2.0
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:10): http://www.merchantscircle.com
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:10): thanks.
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:10): You can build a profile, then start visiting other sites that are along the same lines as your industry.
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:11): Ryze is a funny one I have heard such differing stories - some say its been great for business others that they havent received ANy business at all from it
CrossCountry (2008/04/09 - 13:11): I never knew about networking until I was watching the news one night and a news anchor mentioned it. Then I started searching and found Ryze.
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:11): I did very little with it when I was on. but that was when I first started out too and did not know much
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:11): Ryze was good to me, but as in any network, you have to participate.
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:11): my favs are twitter and facebook
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:11): Linda, I do believe we can help you in the networking department!
(2008/04/09 - 13:11): CrossCountry left the room
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:12): sure
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:12): Yes, Ginger - absolutely have to participate - "lurking" doesn't help you in your networking endeavors
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:12): it was always a little cliquey for my liking
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:12): What happened to Linda?
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:12): I think she got booted
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:13): she's still here in our minds
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:13): LOL
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:13): I told her to log out and back in
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:13): she should be back momentarily
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:13): Ryze was a good launching point, I believe and then many moved on to the other social networking sites. I do believe with Twitter you will soon see a new "revolution" evolving in these sites. As with anything, there's the learning curve to get through but in the end, networking really is what makes your business successful
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:13): How do you pick which venues? There are so many out there and it can be very time consuming to participate.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:14): Know your niche, Jenn
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:14): well part of it is finding places your niche hangs out
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:14): lol
(2008/04/09 - 13:14): CrossCountry joined the room
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:14): then pick one and participate. Once you are established pick another and do it over again.
(2008/04/09 - 13:14): CrossCountry left the room
(2008/04/09 - 13:14): CrossCountry joined the room
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:14): w/b Linda
(2008/04/09 - 13:14): CrossCountry left the room
(2008/04/09 - 13:14): CrossCountry joined the room
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:14): egads
(2008/04/09 - 13:14): CrossCountry left the room
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:14): twitter I think should be good for what I am guessing is your target market
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:15): It's really a matter of personal taste, Jenn. Where do you feel the most comfortable? Just join a few but most importantly, introduce yourself and start asking questions. You'll find out where the business friendly sites are and there are so many that you can find the special ones that fit within your niche
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:15): Before you attempt to get involved, you really need to know the market you are serving.
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:15): Sooo many ................ is overwhelming
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:15): I serve women between 16 and 65
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:16): yep thats why we do only one at a time in the passion room
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:16): that's a huge cross-section
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:16): That's the beauty of the Skype rooms, Jenn - you can benefit from others' experiences - ask questions and read others posts and you will quickly learn where you want to be netowrking
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:16): Jenn you may want to narrow that down for marketing purposes
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:16): who is most likely to use your product/service?
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:16): it doesnt mean you cant sell to anyone who wants to buy
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:16): but its hard to talk to that big a group at the same time
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:16): great question Ginger
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:17): Well that is my broad spectrum, but honestly, they do cover that age span
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:17): which age bracket is the one you receive the most sales from? Would it be the teenage years, the new moms, the baby boomers?
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:17): it is really a variety! honestly.
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:18): Linda can't get back in. I'll open a Skype room
gmarks (2008/04/09 - 13:18): do you all want me to invite you over?
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:18): you can target all of them, but narrow your messages so they are hitting the individual age groups or audiences
caroldeckert (2008/04/09 - 13:18): yes, please
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:19): sure
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:19): I have some time still
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:19): have a client at one
KatherineReschke (2008/04/09 - 13:19): cst
JennBrockman (2008/04/09 - 13:19): I should get back to work.
(2008/04/09 - 13:20): KatherineReschke left the room
(2008/04/09 - 13:21): JennBrockman left the room
(2008/04/09 - 13:27): caroldeckert left the room

[1:20:05 PM] Linda Hall says: Am I in the chatroom now?
[1:20:13 PM] Ginger Marks says: yes
[1:20:15 PM] Ginger Marks says: welcome
[1:20:17 PM] Linda Hall says: At WINning Sisters or Skype?
[1:20:25 PM] Ginger Marks says: Skype
[1:20:32 PM] Katherine Reschke says: hi
[1:20:46 PM] Linda Hall says: Okay. Cool ~ I can see everyone now.
[1:20:50 PM] Ginger Marks says: :D
[1:20:51 PM] Ginger Marks says: whew
[1:20:53 PM] Linda Hall says: Nothing like losing the guest speaker, right?
[1:20:57 PM] Ginger Marks says: that room is a bit screwie
[1:21:12 PM] Katherine Reschke says: can I add you to my skype contacts please Linda?
[1:21:12 PM] Ginger Marks says: I think we will have to meet on Skype until the dimdim comes through
[1:21:16 PM] Ginger Marks says: what do you all think?
[1:21:19 PM] Katherine Reschke says: yes
[1:21:24 PM] Carol Deckert says: Thanks, I'm here!
[1:21:25 PM] Linda Hall says: I could see myself "talking" but no one else could see me.
[1:21:31 PM] Katherine Reschke says: it took me 10 minutes to get into the chat room
[1:21:35 PM] Ginger Marks says: heehee, I knew Katherine would say yes!
[1:21:37 PM] Ginger Marks says: LOLOL
[1:21:57 PM] Linda Hall says: The response time at Skype is much better.
[1:22:03 PM] Linda Hall says: Okay, back on track.
[1:22:12 PM] Carol Deckert says: Ginger, you may want to open a Skype room to use every week - just name it for the group with you as the Owner. It might save some headaches from attempting to enter the other room.
[1:22:29 PM] Carol Deckert says: yes, Linda, may I add you to my Skype contacts also?
[1:22:30 PM] Ginger Marks says: I will right after this chat.
[1:22:41 PM] Linda Hall says: Yes, you can.
[1:22:54 PM] Ginger Marks says: are we missing anyone who was at the chat earlier?
[1:23:05 PM] Linda Hall says: Linda.hall329 is the user name, I think.
[1:23:36 PM] Linda Hall says: I think we're all here.
[1:23:49 PM] Ginger Marks says: ok, Linda, the floor is back to you.
[1:24:01 PM] Linda Hall says: 5 of us total. That's three more than the audience I had yesterday from the CBS crew. LOl
[1:24:10 PM] Linda Hall says: Okay, then. Back on track.
[1:24:18 PM] Ginger Marks says: Oh yes! Do tell about that experience!
[1:24:19 PM] Carol Deckert says: Linda, please tell us about the CBS experience?
[1:24:32 PM] Ginger Marks says: I am dying to know how it came about and went.
[1:24:57 PM] Linda Hall says: That was fun. And it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be either. The report, Dave Malkoff, and his cameraman put me totally at ease.
[1:25:05 PM] Linda Hall says: No microphone in my face. LOL
[1:25:19 PM] Linda Hall says: Does anyone know what a trashout is?
[1:25:34 PM] Carol Deckert says: no, what is that?
[1:25:34 PM] Ginger Marks says: me!
[1:25:36 PM] Ginger Marks says: LOL
[1:26:03 PM] Linda Hall says: A trashout is something we do with the foreclosures that need to be cleaned up and prepared for market.
[1:26:42 PM] Ginger Marks says: kind of like home staging
[1:26:51 PM] Linda Hall says: With the number of foreclosures happening right now, there are a lot of people being forced to move. Many are moving to smaller places or in with family and have no room for their things.
[1:27:29 PM] Linda Hall says: Home staging is what's done after the trashout and ONLY if it's an acceptable hme.
[1:27:54 PM] Linda Hall says: By acceptable I mean one that actually LOOKS clean after it IS cleaned.
[1:28:52 PM] Linda Hall says: The trashout we did yesterday took a full 24' truckload of debris from the house to the dump. Imagine 60 cubic yards and that's what we had. It's quite a lot and usually costs the bank about $2,400.
[1:29:14 PM] Linda Hall says: Then there's the cleaning after the debris removal, grass cutting and yard cleanup.
[1:29:23 PM] Linda Hall says: We do everything, including toilets and windows.
[1:29:31 PM] Katherine Reschke is boggling

[1:29:57 PM] Ginger Marks says: what's boggling?
[1:30:00 PM] Linda Hall says: CBS filmed my crew performing a trashout yesterday and the report will air next Monday night at 11 pm, California time.
[1:30:22 PM] Ginger Marks says: be sure to tape it for usns on the east coast
[1:31:01 PM] Linda Hall says: The house was over 3,000 sf and had 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, family room, living room, kitchen, and dining room. Beautiful 2-story home. But thrashed.
[1:31:24 PM] Linda Hall says: CBS will post a link to the report at their website and I'll post the link at WIN as soon as I have it.
[1:32:01 PM] Linda Hall says: I had a crew of 7 people and it took us 7 hours. So imagine 49 hours worth of work done in one day.
[1:32:13 PM] Ginger Marks says: wow!
[1:32:29 PM] Linda Hall says: It's not an easy job but I work with some of the best people on earth.
[1:32:34 PM] Carol Deckert says: I just don't understand why people have to trash a place when they leave. It's one thing (and I don't totally agree with this either) to leave furniture behind (my opinion is , if in good shape, donate it to Goodwill or somewhere appropriate or trash it at the dump) but just because the home is being foreclosed on doesn't give you a reason to trash it before you leave.
[1:33:08 PM] Linda Hall says: I agree, Carol. And we always donate anything worth using to the thrift stores.
[1:33:10 PM] Ginger Marks says: maybe serveral families lived in that one home together.
[1:33:17 PM] Ginger Marks says: but I agree too.
[1:33:18 PM] Carol Deckert says: I'm sure people know the foreclosure is in process and would have the ample time to determine what to do with their things, just doesn't seem right to ruin anything for someone else to come in and clean it up before living there.
[1:33:42 PM] Katherine Reschke says: people dont always do whats right
[1:33:50 PM] Ginger Marks says: AMEN to that Katherine
[1:33:52 PM] Carol Deckert says: That is what is frustrating to me
[1:33:56 PM] Katherine Reschke says: there's no real rhyme or reason to it
[1:34:16 PM] Linda Hall says: Not everyone has a hand in losing their homes, though, and not everyone's irresponsible. It happens to good people, too. The difference lies in their attitude when it happens. They can get mad or they can lose hope.
[1:34:22 PM] Ginger Marks says: so how did CBS find you in the first place Linda?
[1:34:26 PM] Linda Hall says: I've seen quite a bit since we started this.
[1:34:44 PM] Linda Hall says: CBS read my forum posts at a real estate network, then checked out my website. Then they called.
[1:35:02 PM] Linda Hall says: I was surprised, pleased, and nervous about all of it and wasn't sure how it would go.
[1:35:03 PM] Ginger Marks says: so, you just never know, eh?
[1:35:05 PM] Carol Deckert says: Just proves that blog posts are read by people you have no idea are reading them!
[1:35:40 PM] Linda Hall says: No, you never know. We've gone into homes where medical beds and medical supplies are left behind. It's sad because you know someone was really sick and all the money was spent in hospital bills.
[1:36:09 PM] Ginger Marks says: makes you sick at heart
[1:36:20 PM] Linda Hall says: We've gone into home where it appeared everyone in it was arrested and never came back. Drugs, paraphenalia, scales, and baggies all over the place.
[1:36:37 PM] Linda Hall says: It does make you sick. I don't think we've seen the worst of it yet, though.
[1:37:06 PM] Ginger Marks says: Have you thought about franchising?
[1:37:25 PM] Ginger Marks says: after the CBS airing might be the perfect time.
[1:37:47 PM] Linda Hall says: On the flip side of the thrashed houses, it also makes us sad to see the very clean, very well kept, recently remodeled ones. You know that the homeowners took a lot of pride in their home but lost it to some kind of misfortune beyond their control.
[1:38:23 PM] Linda Hall says: I have subcontractors already in the tri-state area of Nevada, Arizona, and California. I have subcontractors in Lake Elsinore, San Diego, and High Desert areas.
[1:38:42 PM] Linda Hall says: I'm adding a subcontractor in Idaho in about 2 to 3 weeks that will take care of the Boise area.
[1:38:56 PM] Linda Hall says: And you wonder why I can't get in to post at Ryze? LOL
[1:38:58 PM] Ginger Marks says: You might want to talk to an attorney about franchising
[1:39:13 PM] Ginger Marks says: lol
[1:39:19 PM] Linda Hall says: I'm up between 1 am and 3 am and don't get to bed until 7 pm to 9 pm.
[1:39:22 PM] Carol Deckert says: How and where are you marketing your business Linda?
[1:39:27 PM] Linda Hall says: Today I got up at 2:30 am.
[1:39:30 PM] Linda Hall says: Forums
[1:39:39 PM] Linda Hall says: Only forums.
[1:39:40 PM] Ginger Marks says: really? Only forums?
[1:39:46 PM] Carol Deckert says: could you tell us which ones your response is better from?
[1:39:51 PM] Ginger Marks says: looks like you picked the right ones
[1:39:59 PM] Linda Hall says: I placed an ad on Craigslist and got a $4,000 Coldwell Banker job the next day.
[1:40:02 PM] Ginger Marks says: that is what is so great about focusing on your niche
[1:40:14 PM] Linda Hall says: I was only in business for 24 hours before I got my first job.
[1:40:29 PM] Linda Hall says: agentsonline.net - it's a real estate forum.
[1:40:30 PM] Carol Deckert says: that's impressive
[1:40:52 PM] Ginger Marks says: And I designed her logo
[1:40:54 PM] Ginger Marks says: :D
[1:41:16 PM] Linda Hall says: It was wonderful. But Coldwell Banker waited until my lien rights were almost up before they paid. I have only 90 days to file a lien against the property for non-payment.
[1:41:18 PM] Carol Deckert says: you go girl!
[1:41:30 PM] Linda Hall says: Yes, you did, Ginger. And I love you sooooooooooo much, too.
[1:41:44 PM] Carol Deckert says: you know I was just going to warn you about them! I heard the whole franchise is slow paying
[1:41:46 PM] Ginger Marks says: (dance)
[1:42:13 PM] Ginger Marks says: See, the banks know how it works
[1:42:24 PM] Ginger Marks says: they hold the money and make the interest as long as possible
[1:42:26 PM] Carol Deckert says: that is why they have so much money!
[1:42:31 PM] Ginger Marks says: lol
[1:42:34 PM] Linda Hall says: Right now I've got about $30,000 on the books in receivables and all my expenses are paid in cash. It took a lot of work to put that money there and a lot of late utility payments and rent payments but I'm finally past that awkward point.
[1:42:55 PM] Carol Deckert says: can I ask, did you start totally unfunded?
[1:43:13 PM] Linda Hall says: I'll never work with that particular Coldwell Banker office again. But the property is owned by Banco Popular. I contacted them directly when I got no response from CB.
[1:43:45 PM] Ginger Marks says: we live and learn eh?
[1:44:02 PM] Linda Hall says: I take a percentage of the subcontracted work from my subs, but they get the bulk of that. Right now I don't owe too many subs so most of that money is profit.
[1:44:49 PM] Linda Hall says: Ginger can attest to how broke I was at startup. I funded it with my Cross Country Bookkeeping money and got 2 months behind on rent and bills to get started. I recycled cans and every bit of metal scrap we found on the jobs.
[1:45:10 PM] Linda Hall says: Couldn't even afford to pay Ginger for the ad button for a couple months. Huh, Ginger?
[1:45:15 PM] Carol Deckert says: I do believe that's called commitment Linda!
[1:45:25 PM] Linda Hall says: Or INSANITY.
[1:45:49 PM] Carol Deckert says: maybe a little of both! :D
[1:46:33 PM] Linda Hall says: I've been working 7 days a week since the end of last August because I love this business. I undercut all the competition and still make money. I don't believe I have to gouge anyone to survive and the agents, brokers, and banks like that. I have great relatioships with all of them.
[1:46:57 PM] Carol Deckert says: well ladies, this has been enlightening, but I really have to get some work done today. I have a new networking group starting tomorrow and I have not prepared anything yet.
[1:47:25 PM] Linda Hall says: Carole, I've enjoyed chatting with you. I hope you have a wonderful day.
[1:47:41 PM] Carol Deckert says: Thanks Linda for sharing your story. I wish you lots of success moving forward. Please stop in and network with us whenever you can - my skype room is always open! http://www.runlancaster.com/skype-room/networking
[1:47:46 PM] Carol Deckert says: Thanks Linda, you too!
[1:47:52 PM] Carol Deckert says: Bye everyone!
[1:47:53 PM] Linda Hall says: Thanks!
[1:47:58 PM] Ginger Marks says: Yes, we are overtime today. Thanks you all for coming and Linda for sharing
[1:48:07 PM] Ginger Marks says: I'll get the room ready for next week here.
[1:48:25 PM] Linda Hall says: Sorry we got off the bookkeeping track, Ginger.
[1:48:28 PM] Ginger Marks says: :D
[1:48:31 PM] Ginger Marks says: no biggie
[1:48:36 PM] Linda Hall says: I love you, too.
[1:48:45 PM] Ginger Marks says: I am sure we all wanted to know about your CBS stint
[1:49:02 PM] Ginger Marks says: Have a terrific week all and see you all next week for open forum
[1:49:10 PM] Linda Hall says: LOL. I want to know about it, too. I hope I didn't sound like a total dork for the camera.
[1:49:37 PM] Ginger Marks says: Just be grateful for the cutting floor
[1:49:40 PM] Ginger Marks says: lololol
[1:49:43 PM] Linda Hall says: Hee hee.
