My business is babies and preschoolers, sharing information and tips on making the beginning journey to mother hood less stressful. TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:50): I was trying to my N wasn’t working right again lol
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:51): Erica, Chris - intro please?
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:52): While we are waiting - does anyone have any questions, comments? I was not prepared for anything today because I thought we were to have a speaker with us so Let's Just Chat until she arrives.
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:54): Carol I have one for you, When building your network how nicheifide (is that a word?) should you go?
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:54): I have a friend who does a 1-minute video tip each week - he sends it out to his entire list - topics vary (he's a mortgage broker) and has been very successful with this promotion - has anyone done anything like this?
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:55): Tamara, to answer your question - it would depend on what you want your outcome to be - I would suggest you attempt to build your network with like-minded people but you could also include those that are in complimentary businesses - ones that would be easy to build a relationship with because you have a common interest.
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:55): I mean like me my passion is babies and children. So I know that some of my connections should be parents, however I also do alot of networking with other type of people too. But I was wondering should i start to focus on parents and business people who also serve this niche?
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:56): Oh okey :) that makes perfect sense
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:57): I would begin by posting on as many forums as possible and introducing yourself as much as possible - business people are actually everywhere and it is not always apparent that they are also parents. Some do not reveal that info about themselves. But by being there and posting comments, answering/asking questions, they will know they can trust you and will connect with you. That is a great way to increase your niche and your contact base
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:58): ok sounds good
KatherineReschke (2008/02/27 - 12:58): ok guys I better get back to work
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:58): did that answer your question?
KatherineReschke (2008/02/27 - 12:58): have fun all
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:58): what are thoughts on sites like Yahoo Answers does that help with your business?
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:58): Thanks Katherine - not sure what happened but thanks for coming!
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:58): Yes it did

LisaGuarino (2008/02/27 - 12:58): have a great day, Katherine
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 12:59): I personally have never used Yahoo Answers but I think it would definitely help - any place you have the ability to showcase your expertise is a good place to be
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 12:59): Sounds good to me :) Thanks a bunch
(2008/02/27 - 13:00): Chris left the room
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:00): yw - any other questions?

LisaGuarino (2008/02/27 - 13:04): Tamara, blogging is another good way to get your business out there.
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:04): Thanks Lisa :)
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:05): This is a great opportunity to start some conversations with each other - how about brainstorming on a particular topic?

gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:07): I have been presenting and nobody could see me?

gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:07): weird!
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:08): Toto, I wasn't in Kansas anymore.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:08): lolol
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:08): ok, post away now that you are here - catch us up on what you were saying!
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:08): I did a whole presentation on Web2.0
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:08): too bad you all missed it.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:08): :D
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:08): Oh man that stinks.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:08): Here's an interesting video on the topic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LzQIUANnHc
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:09): and we were sitting here - holding our breath - wanting to hear about this topic and we missed it!
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:09): lolol
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:09): Let me quickly define Web2.0
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:10): but first please share what your thoughts are about what it is
LisaGuarino (2008/02/27 - 13:10): I’ve heard New media
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:11): I think of it i as an interactive website, that has rss feeds. It helps build relationships and trust with clients/readers
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:11): yes, and yes.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:11): but it is much more.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:11): You’ve probably heard the phrase "Web 2.0". You may’ve even read some of the various definitions of it. And Web 2.0 does appear to mean different things to different people, so you would be forgiven for still feeling confused about the term. Here are some of the definitions of Web 2.0 floating about:
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:12): Web 2.0 = the web as platform
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:12): Web 2.0 = the underlying philosophy of relinquishing control
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:12): Web 2.0 = globalization ("making global information available to local social contexts and giving people the flexibility to find, organize, share and create information in a locally meaningful fashion that is globally accessible")
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:13): Web 2.0 = an attitude not a technology
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:13): Web 2.0 = when data, interface and metadata no longer need to go hand in hand
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:13): Web 2.0 = action-at-a-distance interactions and ad hoc integration
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:13): Web 2.0 = power and control via APIs
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:14): Web 2.0 = giving up control and setting the data free
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:14): and I have even heard it referred to as a way of designing.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:14): Clients are asking more and more for a Web2.0 logo and such.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:15): Have any of you had any similar experiences?
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:15): what is the difference between a logo and a Web2.0 logo? I'm confused
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:15): Not really
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:15): I think they are more crisp
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:15): So you can see why we are all having so much difficulty figuring out what Web2.0 really is.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:16): The Web2.0 logo has a more 3-D look to it.
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:16): Where as before they were more soft and fluffy I guess is a way to put it,
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:16): more shadowing, more highlights, reflections, etc.
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:16): That’s the word I was looking for
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:17): I know How to do them But I personally find alot of them not overly great. I still prefer the softer look. But that’s me
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:17): So there are many ways to think about Web2.0 depending on where you are coming from.
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:18): to me, when I see more 3D type images - it has an "outer space" effect on me - I don't really like that!
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:18): So, at first glance some of those definitions may be contradictory, we can distill from them certain characteristics of Web 2.0.
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:18): some shadowing is good but I like more comfortable "feeling" logos
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:18): Web 2.0 is social, it’s open (or at least it should be), it’s letting go of control over your data, it’s mixing the global with the local.
caroldeckert (2008/02/27 - 13:19): which is why there are so many social networking sites opening up
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:19): Web 2.0 is about new interfaces - new ways of searching and accessing Web content. And last but not least, Web 2.0 is a platform
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:19): and not just for developers to create web applications like Gmail and Flickr.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:19): The Web is a platform to build on for educators, media, politics, community, for virtually everyone in fact!
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:19): That includes US!
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:20): Web 2.0 is all of the above things - don’t let anyone tell you it’s one or the other definition.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:20): Take a look at what you can now do, that we didn't just a year or so ago
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:21): with the Web, for example. They are not only starting to use the tools of Web 2.0 - blogs, wikis, podcasts, etc.
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:21): Of topic maybe whats a wiki?
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:21): if it’s too off topic we can discuss it later ;)
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:22): no, Tamara, that is exactly the point
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:22): Wiki is an interactive encyclopedia
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:22): ever changing and evolving
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:23): new topics being added and old removed daily.
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:22): They also offer a wiki dictionary
(2008/02/27 - 13:22): caroldeckert left the room
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:23): that offers up to date definitions
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:23): does that help Tamara?
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:24): ahh okey I get it now why Wikipedia
TamaraWilson (2008/02/27 - 13:24): Yup
gmarks (2008/02/27 - 13:24): why?
