caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:40): Should we jump right in and get started Ginger?
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:40): sounds good
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 12:40): absolutely, the floor is yours Carol
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:41): Relationship Building and Strategic Partnerships - sounds a little scary to some folks, doesn't it?
Inez (2008/01/30 - 12:41): yes
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 12:41): big names
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:41): I like to think of it as meeting people with the same interests as you have.
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:41): perfect
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 12:41): won't that be like joining forces with the competition?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:41): Strategic alliances are based on common interests and goals.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:42): not really Ginger - it's finding a business that offers products and/or services that go hand-in-hand with what you offer - looking at the same target market or similar target markets
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 12:43): OK, I understand now, I think.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:43): We had a good example of that going this morning in Katherine Reschke's Passion Room - when Rebecca was brainstorming with us about topics for articles
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 12:43): lol
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:43): Let's start this way
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 12:44): OK, sitting down and shutting up. LOL
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 12:44): ahh exactly what I do with my clients :-) Finding the right media for their target market...
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:44): If you are targeting a particular market with your product/service - think about what else that market could use or might be interested in
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:44): Yes Patrysha
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:44): As you meet people, ask important questions so that you truly understand what they do.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:45): Your product/service may work very well with their product/service
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:45): If that's the case, it would be a great strategic alliance for the two of you to partner up and market to each other's client/prospect list(s)
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:45): make sense?
Inez (2008/01/30 - 12:46): absolutely
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:46): ok so if u don't have a specific product or service that would help them but u know who does, do u tell them that info?
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 12:46): absosmurfly...
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:46): yes, you would
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:46): i guess that is kind of a service in a way then. lol
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:46): Helping out others is one of the major steps in relationship building.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:46): yes, Melanie it is
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 12:47): yep it's matchmaking business style...I know this friend that can help you with this or that...then they do the same down the road...or not...
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:47): We were given 2 ears and only 1 mouth because we are to listen more than speak
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:47): Yes, Patrysha - matchmaking is a great example
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 12:47): Building relationships online is not that different from building them offline.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:47): no it is not - it's exactly the same
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:48): The only difference is that you usually cannot see the person you are speaking with when you are online
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:48): except usually more useful information
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:48): It really helps that now photos are able to be uploaded
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:48): Melanie? Not sure what your comment meant?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 12:48): yes, the photos help you put a face with the person your speaking with!
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:49): matchmaking is usually geared to finding likes and islikes in a persons personal life. they tend to take on communication at a more personal level. whereas with networking it is more for learning and understanding practical business sense and steps.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:50): in a sense Melanie but not always
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:50): Networking can be for personal OR business
(2008/01/30 - 12:50): Michelle_DMS left the room
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:50): the goal or objective would be different though
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:51): Matchmaking is just a term that is geared more toward personal relationships and is usually not part of the language used connected with business
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:51): The goal or objective would be to CONNECT the proper people needed to get the job done
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:51): ok right
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:52): While connecting people you are helping them with the resources they need and/or want
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:52): As you continue to help others, you are beginning to build a relationship with them.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:53): Relationships are very important - its how you get to know, like and/or trust someone BEFORE you put your good name on the line and refer them to your friends, clients, prospects or even suspects
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:54): u have a personal contact who happens to be a great plummer. u then hook them up with someone u know personally who needs a plummer but who is a caregiver and that caregiver can thus be introduced to someone else who needs her service.
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:54): if that plummer sucks and ruins the job there goes all your hard work
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:54): If I did not know you, but my trusted client Mary did, and Mary told me you were the perfect person to get done whatever it was I needed, trust is already established because you know Mary wouldn't tell me about someone who did not do a good job
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:55): Melanie you are talking about paying it forward and that does go hand-in-hand wtih relationship building
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:55): It's a prime example of how the spheres of influence work within one another
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:55): You would not want to recommend someone who might just mess up that job - your "good name" would be jeopardized, wouldn't it?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:56): Let me give you a personal example of something that just happened yesterday.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:58): I was contacted via phone by one of my first-level connections on LinkedIn. Although we were connected on the first level we had not yet begun to get to know one another. Gail called me because she was looking for a person who could take a powerpoint and scrub it out and clean it up for her research development company to present to a prospect for work. SHe contacted several VAs that she found online but none of them could offer her a sample of their work. They simply told her she had to trust them and then proceeded to tell her how much they would charge.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:58): That didn't sit well with her- she would have to pay them, no matter what kind of work they did and if it wasn't good enough for her customer, her business name may suffer.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:58): right?
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 12:59): not good
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:59): so she called me. She said, we don't really know one another yet, but your name is everywhere these days (guess that is good, LOL) and we ARE connected on LinkedIn.
melanie (2008/01/30 - 12:59): true
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 12:59): Because of that connection and your name recognition from the posts I've seen, I trust your judgement. Who can you refer for me to get this work done?
melanie (2008/01/30 - 13:00): and u knew someone
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:00): ya, Ginger!
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:00): LOLOL
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:00): I thought a few minutes and remembered that Crystal Pina who did a great job working with me on my blog installing Feedburner. Crystal and I were chatting and she told me she loves to create powerpoints and web designs, blog designs, etc.
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:00): NOT
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:01): :(
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:01): Gail was so thrilled that Crystal got the rest of the job.
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:01): I only wrote a book about it
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:01): lolol
melanie (2008/01/30 - 13:01): good business
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:01): Now that was relationship building
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:01): Spread the wealth!
melanie (2008/01/30 - 13:01): yes i agree
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:02): Gail contacted me by my online reputation, I recommended Crystal - Gail is happy and will more than likely give Crystal more work
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:02): Do you think that was a good relationship for Gail to initiate?
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:02): That's too cool!
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 13:02): it sure was...
melanie (2008/01/30 - 13:03): yes
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:03): what criteria did you use to recommend Crystal/
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:03): Do you think Gail will remember me for what I do?
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 13:03): I love it when things work out like that!
melanie (2008/01/30 - 13:03): yes she will
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:04): I had seen first-hand some of the work that Crystal did. However, not knowing what Gail wanted exactly, I was hesitant to just give her that info. I contacted Crystal and asked her if she would be willing to do a page or so to show Gail what she could do
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:04): Crystal did that and it was a great match
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:04): So really I didn't need to judge that particular job - I just knew Crystal did awesome work and gave Crystal the opportunity to show Gail herself
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:04): ahh so you stepped in and suggested a way for both people to be happy/
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:04): Referrals are the best, even if they are for working relationships
melanie (2008/01/30 - 13:04): that is the best thing to do when someone is not sure of your talents
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:05): Yes and it worked!
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:05): it did!
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:05): I think that step was vital to the success but I wonder how many people would have left it out
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:05): If someone were to ask Gail about who she knew that could help someone learn networking, who do you think Gail will recommend?
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:05): would have just given Crystal's details to Gail
melanie (2008/01/30 - 13:05): you
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:06): Good point Katherine - it proves that by LISTENING to what Crystal had shared with me - before she ever knew I would need it
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:06): and by LISTENING to what Gail needed, I could put the two of them together and could offer a solution that would benefit both parties
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:07): so that took the relationship one level deeper - because contact info was not only exchanged - the extra step was taken to make sure it was a good match
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:07): Questions?
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:07): can I be you when I grow up?
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:07): that is really awesome
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:07): :D
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:08): LOL! I'm nothing special - you all can do the same thing! It's just a matter of listening and practicing!~
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:08): You see how relationship building can benefit both parties.
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:08): no dont mean to argue but you ARE something special
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:08): That really ties into strategic alliances or power partnering as well.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:09): Aw, thanks Katherine!
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:09): What is the difference?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:09): The same steps are used to find and create a strategic alliance or power partnership for yourself
KatherineReschke (2008/01/30 - 13:09): that extra step and that ability to figure out how to best introduce two people was key here and has really given me something to think about
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:09): Let's brainstorm a little and see what we can come up with
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:10): who wants to volunteer to give us details about their business
gmarks (2008/01/30 - 13:10): What do you want to know?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:10): let's not all volunteer at one time!
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:11): Yvette - we haven't heard much from you and I don't mean to put you on the spot but let's use your business for a practice run
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 13:11): I'll volunteer if you want to pick on somebody
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:11): I am an independent distributor with Mia Bella Candles.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:11): Ok, what makes you unique?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:12): I want to help SAHM discover that they too can have a successful WAHM business! Our products are clean burning, and produce virtually no soot. They are triple scented.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:13): That's all great info about the product - now what about YOU?caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:12): Ok, what makes you unique?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:13): What do you do in your business that will keep you on top of my mind when someone says anything about a candle business?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:13): I want to help SAHM discover that they too can have a successful WAHM business! Our products are clean burning, and produce virtually no soot. They are triple scented.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:13): That's all great info about the product - now what about YOU?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:14): Relationships start with people so what should I know about you and how your handle your business
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 13:14): yes, it's very important to differentiate your business from the product when in DS
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:14): DS or any other business for that matter
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:15): I am offering others the ability to build a business. I am offering them a business relationship built with integrity and trust.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:15): Without people there would be no business
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:15): How do I know you have integrity - why should I trust you? What have you done for a client that would make me know I can trust you?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:16): I want them to know that I too have been in their position of looking for a home based business. I know how difficult it is to find someone or a business you can trust.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:16): Have you had any experiences in finding someone or a business to place your trust in? Can you share that experience?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:16): I have people on my team that trust me. I have customers who have purchased my products and keep returning for more.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:17): If people keep returning for more products, why do they come back to YOU - why wouldn't they simply buy from anyone else selling Mia Bella?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:17): Well, sure, I think just looking for a home based business online can be daunting! There are so many hyped up ads you have to sort through.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:17): keep going you are doing great
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:17): I am providing them with excellent customer service.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:18): are you listening for possible health/allergy issues?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:18): I happen to know your product, that's why I am being so specific.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:18): If you find someone with an allergic reaction to your candles, is there someone in your sphere of influence that the allergic person would be a potential referral to?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:18): I know alot of people are looking for a get rich quick, not have to work type of businesses. I let my contacts know that they will have to work. I just think in life you have to work for what you want!
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:19): My mother has asthma and these are the first candles she's been able to burn. She loves them.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:19): Yes, you do - keep providing that type of info for them to help sort out the issues they may be having in looking for a HB business
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:20): Do you all see how this conversation is moving toward finding common ground for building relationships?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:20): No, I wouldn't know who to refer someone to if they had an allergic reaction to my candles. They are as natural as they get!
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:20): Sure! caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:20): see, before this, you never told us they are natural!
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:20): Whoops! You got me!
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:21): that's an important part of your product - but the YOU still remains to be found - what makes YOU as a consultant better/different than all the other consultants?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:21): Okay, my candles are made from natural vegetable wax - not parrafin like other candles.
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 13:21): I wrote a press release for a Mia Bella rep a few years back...I'm digging through my brain trying to remember how I differentiated back then...
Inez (2008/01/30 - 13:21): just sitting back and learning....thank you so much.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:21): I'm still not hearing more about YOU the consultant - the one going to be recommending this product for me.
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:22): I believe in my product and in myself. I am here to provide the service they need for the products and to help them succeed at building a home business if they want. caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:22): Think about the questions you can ask so you can showcase your expertise as a CONSULTANT
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:23): I guess I'm not sure what you're asking for?
RadioGirl (2008/01/30 - 13:23): Because the fact is that in the ...WAH circles - most people will know four or five reps for a particular company - so you want to be the one they think of first...that's what all this is getting at...
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:24): Yes, Patrysha - that's exactly it! Why should we/I choose YOU over all the other consultants I know sell that exact same product? How are YOU going to help me make my decisions?
(2008/01/30 - 13:24): RadioGirl left the room
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:24): Does that make sense Yvette?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:25): I am providing them with info about me. I want them to be comfortable with me and know that I am here to help them. I guess it's like buying a car. We always go back to our same salesman because we trust him. He's always provided us with awesome customer service. We have built a relationship over the years.
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:25): Yes, that does.
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:25): I think you have to develop that sense of trust online just like we do offline, right?
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:26): He also provides you with good information - he helps you make a selection that will provide the transportation you need for your family - he gets to know what you want and/or need - that's the whole idea - you don't buy from that dealer - you buy from that salesman because you trust HIM
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:26): absolutely right!
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:26): Get to know the person - the person, not the business
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:26): the person is who you will recommend - the person is who you trust
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:27): sure.
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:27): It's now 1:25 EST and I want to be mindful of our time. Any other questions or comments that you want to discuss?
YvetteMason (2008/01/30 - 13:27): No, but thank you so much! You're great!
caroldeckert (2008/01/30 - 13:27): If anyone wants to talk more about their own situations/business and how to build some relationships, I would be happy to chat with you. Feel free to contact me anytime.
