[Under the Waterfall]: Tammy Munson has entered at 12:55 pm
[bea kunz] 12:56 pm: We grow and process all of our product right here at the farm.
[Sandy Morgan] 12:56 pm: any good for arthritis
[Barb] 12:56 pm: Bea, what's is the best herb for insomnia?
[hlhixon] 12:56 pm: Bea, I would be interested in learning how to get started growing your own small herb garden... what are the best ones to start with, etc?
[bea kunz] 12:57 pm: It is all organ in the growing methods, meaning we use no chemicals or pesticides.
[teresa] 12:57 pm: what is a good herb as a sleep aid?
[bea kunz] 12:57 pm: Sandy...I can give you a list if you will PM me later.
[bea kunz] 12:58 pm: Barb...lavender is one of the best, makes you sleep like a contented baby!
[Barb] 12:58 pm: I have a lavender spray beside my bed but it's not very effective.
[YvonneO] 12:58 pm: MY question: in which dishes do I use rosemary and what is the benefit of rosemary (if any)
[YvonneO] 12:59 pm: Barb, I use Lavender Essential OIl under the soles of my foot before I go to sleep
[bea kunz] 12:59 pm: Holly...if you are looking at starting a kitchen garden...your basics are, thyme, oregano, sage, dill, chives and basil.
[bea kunz] 12:59 pm: Barb...I'll mail you with some suggestions.
[bea kunz] 1:00 pm: Oh yes, the lavender E-oil is very effective...in many ways.
[Barb] 1:00 pm: Thanks Bea! I sleep OK - but it's GETTING to sleep that is the problem. I can't shut off my mind.
[bea kunz] 1:01 pm: Rosemary is a wonderful herb for baked or roasted/grilled meats.
[Sandy Morgan] 1:01 pm: ok Bea, ty
[KimE] 1:01 pm: I love this group!
[YvonneO] 1:01 pm: Try reading for 15 minutes before going to sleep. A good book, helps for me ;-)
[GingerMarks] 1:01 pm: Oh, Lavendar Oil. Yvonne has a coupon coming out for that in the Sister's Welcome Coupon Book.
[Barb] 1:01 pm: Yes, reading does help Yvonne.
[KimE] 1:01 pm: yummmmmmm Rosemary
[hlhixon] 1:01 pm: TY Bea.... full sun, partial shade?
[Under the Waterfall]: Yvonne O has entered at 1:01 pm
[Yvonne O] 1:01 pm: Oeps
[KimE] 1:02 pm: WB Yvonne!
[teresa] 1:02 pm: My hubby sometimes has trouble sleeping
[bea kunz] 1:02 pm: On the grill, after the food is cooking, wet a nice size sprig of rosemary and lay it across the food...continue to keep it moist and the flavor will seep into the food beautifully.
[teresa] 1:02 pm: I like Lavendar as well...I will have to check that out
[Sandy Morgan] 1:02 pm: say affirmaations b4 sleep
[KimE] 1:02 pm: Lavendar! yum
[Under the Waterfall]: YvonneO has left at 1:02 pm
[teresa] 1:02 pm: great info about rosemary
[GingerMarks] 1:02 pm: Yvonne, what is your URL for the Lavendar oil?
[Yvonne O] 1:02 pm: TY Bea, BBQ season is on it's way
[Yvonne O] 1:03 pm: https://www.youngliving.org/hoyo888
[GingerMarks] 1:03 pm: ty
[bea kunz] 1:03 pm: Holly...most all herbs require and certainly flourish with full sun, well drained soil and not too much pampering.
[Yvonne O] 1:03 pm: OK Bea, another one... How about your name sake : SAGE ???
[Yvonne O] 1:03 pm: Use and benefits?
[hlhixon] 1:03 pm: TY
[bea kunz] 1:04 pm: No fertilizing is needed...remember they are natures bounty...they get what they need from the earth.
[GingerMarks] 1:04 pm: Bea, I have a question, what is the difference between store bought spices and yours?
[Eula] 1:04 pm: I can answer that, Ging...Everything! lol
[bea kunz] 1:04 pm: Sage...is my favorite...it was my mothers also, it's a very old world herb
[KimE] 1:05 pm: now there's a loaded question Ginger!
[Eula] 1:05 pm: lol
[Yvonne O] 1:05 pm: I love the smell of sage, but I am unsure on how to use it
[Sandy Morgan] 1:05 pm: eula makes me dizzy lol
[bea kunz] 1:05 pm: It can be used in all things "bready" dressings, grits, cornbread, etc
[GingerMarks] 1:05 pm: it's great on porkchops
[teresa] 1:05 pm: Good question Ginger...please let us know the answer to Ginger question, Bea
[bea kunz] 1:05 pm: It also works magic with meats
[bea kunz] 1:06 pm: What was the question Ginger
[Sandy Morgan] 1:06 pm: how
[Eula] 1:06 pm: lol sorry Sandy...eating one of Gloria's irish cream bundts ad feeling good!
[KimE] 1:06 pm: Bea, what makes your herbs so much better than store bought
[GingerMarks] 1:06 pm: what is the
difference between store bought spices and yours?
[Yvonne O] 1:06 pm: HIPS Eula
[bea kunz] 1:07 pm: I see it...everything...
[GingerMarks] 1:07 pm: Rub it in EULA!
[KimE] 1:07 pm: yes! I agree. I will never use store bought again!
[Sandy Morgan] 1:07 pm:
[GingerMarks] 1:07 pm: How often should we replace our spices?
[Eula] 1:07 pm:
[Yvonne O] 1:07 pm: Sorry girls, gotta go... little ones are waiting for MIss Yvonne... bye
[bea kunz] 1:07 pm: Well, it isn't a mystery...fresh is better in anything.
[KimE] 1:08 pm: Yvonne, love you!
[GingerMarks] 1:08 pm: bye Yvonne
[Yvonne O] 1:08 pm: Thank you bea, answers are useful
[Yvonne O] 1:08 pm: BYE
[Sandy Morgan] 1:08 pm: bye y
[Eula] 1:08 pm: bye Y!
[bea kunz] 1:09 pm: With mass market herbs, think about how they are harvested...with a machine, so you get stems, dirt, bugs, who knows what else...and then it's all ground up so fine, you don't know it's there.
[GingerMarks] 1:09 pm: ewww
[bea kunz] 1:09 pm: bye Yvonne...we will chat
[Eula] 1:09 pm: yuck
[Tammy Munson] 1:09 pm: thats gross...
[Under the Waterfall]: Yvonne O has left at 1:09 pm
[Sandy Morgan] 1:10 pm: like bed mites
[Barb] 1:10 pm: Herbs really need a lot of sun. I grow basic and two summers ago I couldn't understand why it was doing so poorly. Last summer I moved the pop into direct sun and it grew like crazy. Did you say all herbs require direct sun, Bea?
[bea kunz] 1:10 pm: We , first of all, as I said, don't use chemicals...so they are safe......herbs are meant to make us healthier, if they are sprayed with chemicals, then the purpose is lost
[Barb] 1:10 pm: I mean I grow basil - not basic - LOL
[Eula] 1:10 pm: lol
[GingerMarks] 1:10 pm: lol
[KimE] 1:11 pm: Bea! yuck! thanks for pointing that out. Totally gross!
[KimE] 1:11 pm: Barb, basic basil. LOL
[Barb] 1:11 pm: Yeah - that's it - basic basil - LOL
[bea kunz] 1:11 pm: Yes, Barb, all herbs need at least 8 or more hours of sun to be healthy and to flourish
[Barb] 1:11 pm: And I put it in a pot - not a pop
[Sandy Morgan] 1:12 pm: lol
[GingerMarks] 1:12 pm: so, now that we don't buy gross spices any more how often do we need to replace to keep them viable and alive?
[bea kunz] 1:12 pm: Basil is the most finicky herb to grow...it will not tolerate wet feet.....too much water will damage any of your herbs...
[bea kunz] 1:13 pm: I replace my own cooking stash every 3 months at least...they will last longer, but with every day that passes, they lose some vital oils
[Barb] 1:13 pm: I thought of you often last summer Bea when Claire and I were picking our basil from our pathetic little pot - thinking of your entire farm of herbs
[Sandy Morgan] 1:13 pm: so it wont grow in pop, barb'
[GingerMarks] 1:13 pm: lol
[bea kunz] 1:14 pm: Storage is the key to making them last.
[Barb] 1:14 pm: That's right Sandy! LOL
[GingerMarks] 1:14 pm: That must have been her problem! Trying to grow it in pop! LMBO
[Barb] 1:14 pm: LOL
[teresa] 1:14 pm: hehehe
[Sandy Morgan] 1:14 pm: lol
[bea kunz] 1:14 pm: well...we all have to learn!
[Barb] 1:14 pm: My fingers seem to be slipping off the keys this morning...
[GingerMarks] 1:14 pm: So how do you properly store them?
[Barb] 1:15 pm: Bea, how do you store them once you've harvested?
[GingerMarks] 1:15 pm: Do you have to dry them in the dark? or do you use a dehydrator?
[bea kunz] 1:16 pm: If you've ever ordered from me you know they come in a brown bag with a glysene lining.....it's for proper food packing. You can leave it in this bag and it will stay fresh...or you can empty it out into glass containers
[bea kunz] 1:17 pm: dark glass is better, with a tight lid...store in a place away from the stove and or bright windows...in the food pantry is usually good.
[Barb] 1:18 pm: You mean, once you've picked it - store it in a glass container at room temp? - not in the fridge?
[bea kunz] 1:18 pm: with some things I use the dehydrater..with others I hang them...we are having a new barn erected just for that purpose
[KimE] 1:18 pm: Barb, no, she was talking about the herbs you order from her that are already dried
[KimE] 1:19 pm: WOW Bea, that is great!
[Barb] 1:19 pm: Oh, I see - got it!
[bea kunz] 1:19 pm: No Barb...once it is dried...store in glass jars away from heat.
[Barb] 1:19 pm: Got it!
[GingerMarks] 1:19 pm: a barn raising! How FUN!
[KimE] 1:19 pm: I want to help raise the barn! I am good at that
[bea kunz] 1:19 pm: If your talking fresh picked...just put in a glass of water and leave it on the counter
[Barb] 1:20 pm: in a glass of water? Interesting. ty
[bea kunz] 1:20 pm: it will stay fresh for days with the addition of fresh water...you don't want to keep it more than a few days anyway...fresh
[Barb] 1:20 pm: That's good to know1
[KimE] 1:20 pm: great info Bea
[bea kunz] 1:21 pm: once you put herbs in the frig...the E-oils sorta go dormant!
[Sandy Morgan] 1:21 pm: ah
[Under the Waterfall]: Annette has entered at 1:21 pm
[Barb] 1:21 pm: Really? T his is SO good to know!!
[bea kunz] 1:22 pm: yes..Kim, I'm so excited about my new barn!!
[KimE] 1:22 pm: no kidding Barb, I had no idea! all these years I have been doing it wrong!
[GingerMarks] 1:22 pm: hi there Annette
[bea kunz] 1:22 pm: Hi Annette...good to have you here.
[GingerMarks] 1:22 pm: me too.
[KimE] 1:22 pm: Hi Annette!
[GingerMarks] 1:22 pm: I have only fresh parsley
[GingerMarks] 1:22 pm: pick it and put in fridge
[GingerMarks] 1:22 pm: ty Bea
[KimE] 1:22 pm: Bea, when does the barn go up?
[bea kunz] 1:22 pm: Fresh parsley is good!
[hlhixon] 1:23 pm: Bea, what herbs are we able to grow from cuttings as opposed to seed?
[bea kunz] 1:23 pm: We have a group of Minnonite builders here, they are in the process of building it now.
[Annette] 1:23 pm: Hi to all of you. I am multi-tasking, but I really wanted to be here. I finally found my way in. :-)
[KimE] 1:24 pm: OH wow! Bea, you will have the perfect barn then! they know how to build!
[Sandy Morgan] 1:24 pm: cool, bea
[LindaA] 1:24 pm: Just to pipe in . . . I'm mult-tasking, too, but I'm listening intently!
[bea kunz] 1:24 pm: Holly...it is really a personal choice...most everything grows better from seed, because it connects to the earth early on and doesn't have to adjust twice..
[bea kunz] 1:25 pm: Dill is the one herb that really must grow from seed to flourish...
[KimE] 1:25 pm: LOVE dill
[bea kunz] 1:25 pm: it will be weak and spindly f you transplant it.
[Sandy Morgan] 1:26 pm: love dill
[bea kunz] 1:26 pm: Me too...dill on salmon or in breakfast eggs..yummy
[KimE] 1:26 pm: yes!
[Sandy Morgan] 1:26 pm: lol, kim
[hlhixon] 1:26 pm: TY Bea. What about transplanting herbs from and outdoor garden to an indoor pot for winter salvage?
[Sandy Morgan] 1:26 pm: hungry noow
[bea kunz] 1:27 pm: If I've missed a question..just sing out...
[hlhixon] 1:27 pm: ...is it recommended? should we just start over with new seed? etc
[bea kunz] 1:28 pm: Holly...I'm not an advocate of taking herbs inside for over-wintering, you can with some things and be somewhat successful...but, remember, it is taking them out of their natural state and they will show a certain amount of shock
[Barb] 1:28 pm: Bea, so if I bought some seeds and just planted them in a pot using regular potting soil you buy at the store, they would do fine?
[bea kunz] 1:29 pm: I don't use potting soil and don't think it is the best for herbs at all Barb
[Barb] 1:29 pm: Ok - so I should mix my own, you're saying.
[bea kunz] 1:30 pm: Go to a good garden cente, better yet if you can get to a local farm operation...get composted organic material...
[Barb] 1:30 pm: OK - Good to know.
[bea kunz] 1:31 pm: any natural compost will make a world of difference in your production and health of the plants
[hlhixon] 1:31 pm: TY Bea!
[bea kunz] 1:31 pm: we don't use any soil(dirt) in our gardens...it is all compost
[GingerMarks] 1:31 pm: I planted a flower garden and only used composte.
[Barb] 1:31 pm: Interesting!
[GingerMarks] 1:32 pm: It is huge now!
[bea kunz] 1:32 pm: think about what the forest plants live and thrive on...
[GingerMarks] 1:32 pm: everything grew into monster plants.
[KimE] 1:32 pm: nice
[GingerMarks] 1:32 pm: lol
[GingerMarks] 1:32 pm: too big for the area.
[Barb] 1:32 pm: Monster plants??!!
[Barb] 1:32 pm: I may not have enough room on my deck for monster plants...LOL
[GingerMarks] 1:32 pm: lol
[bea kunz] 1:33 pm: our herbs grow to 3 and 5 ft tall...and at the end of the season we have to cut down and till back into the garden...you will have more than you could ever use.
[Annette] 1:33 pm: My 11 yr old just planted a garden in our backyard. I will let him know all that and that it came from a professional and not his mom or grandmom, We will start a compost for him.
[Barb] 1:33 pm: OMG
[bea kunz] 1:33 pm: Barb...compost is especially important if you are growing in containers
[GingerMarks] 1:34 pm: How fun Annette
[KimE] 1:34 pm: I have no clue how to start compost
[Barb] 1:34 pm: One of my goals last year was to start a composte....still hasn't happened.
[GingerMarks] 1:34 pm: turn and water, turn and water.
[Annette] 1:34 pm: He wouold enjoy having "monster plants!"
[GingerMarks] 1:34 pm: lol
[teresa] 1:34 pm: that is cute
[bea kunz] 1:34 pm: Annette...bless you! that is such wonderful fun and great teaching...but then he has awesome role models...
[KimE] 1:35 pm: turn and water what ginger?
[GingerMarks] 1:35 pm: compost materials
[hlhixon] 1:35 pm: Bea, could you give us some tips for starting our own compost piles?
[GingerMarks] 1:35 pm: leaves, non-meat foodscraps, etc
[KimE] 1:35 pm: see that's the point, what makes good compost stuff
[GingerMarks] 1:36 pm: what else Ms. Bea?
[KimE] 1:36 pm: oh, cool
[bea kunz] 1:36 pm: Kim...composting is simple..eitheron the ground..or in a compost bin....add all of your kitchen waste...fruit and vegetable peels, coffee and tea grinds and egg shells.....NO meat or cooked foods at all...
[Annette] 1:37 pm: Actually, I am a bad role model for gardening. He actually asked me and Mike where he could start a garden - he was determined! He planted it already. I hope the frost won't get it before it has a chance to fourish.
[KimE] 1:37 pm: Thanks Bea,that helps. I will start one right now with this mess in the fidge! lOL.
[Sandy Morgan] 1:37 pm: how do you keep animals out
[KimE] 1:37 pm: Sandy, with a big stick. LOL
[bea kunz] 1:38 pm: to that add all your grass clippings, dead leaves, green leaves, and add some bloodmeal or purchase a bag of compost to make it workable.....then go to a garden shop, bait shop, etc, and buy a container of earth worms...
[KimE] 1:38 pm: J/K folks
[Annette] 1:38 pm: LOL Kim!
[Sandy Morgan] 1:38 pm: yeah
[bea kunz] 1:38 pm: Earth worms will add all the natural fertilizer you need...
[Under the Waterfall]: Tammy Munson has left at 1:38 pm
[KimE] 1:38 pm: Bea, I would never have thought about worms, but boy does that make sense
[Under the Waterfall]: Amanda Hamm has entered at 1:39 pm
[KimE] 1:39 pm: (((Amanda))))
[bea kunz] 1:39 pm: compost does not smell or attract animals...unless you put things in it that shouldn't be there
[Under the Waterfall]: Amanda Hamm has left at 1:39 pm
[Under the Waterfall]: Amanda Hamm has entered at 1:39 pm
[Barb] 1:39 pm: Bea and Ginger - I have to drive to the airport so will say good bye. Thank you so much! This has been fabulous. I want more!!
[bea kunz] 1:40 pm: mine sits out in the open and I have never had any problem with oder or animals...it should smell like good earth
[GingerMarks] 1:40 pm: you can create a compost bin
[hlhixon] 1:40 pm: I have some nasty little squirrels that would love to get their claws on some of my kitchen scraps...they won't be attracted to this?
[bea kunz] 1:40 pm: thanks Barb...please feel free to ask for any help you would like.
[GingerMarks] 1:41 pm: mine too right on the ground in a corner of the yard
[GingerMarks] 1:41 pm: bye Barb
[GingerMarks] 1:41 pm: thanks for coming
[Under the Waterfall]: Barb has left at 1:41 pm
[bea kunz] 1:42 pm: Holly...you have to cover it at intervals in order to build heat......that is what makes it break down and turn into good earth.
[GingerMarks] 1:42 pm: that is unless you live in Florida.
[GingerMarks] 1:42 pm: lol
[hlhixon] 1:43 pm: would a simple tarp work?
[GingerMarks] 1:43 pm: all this talk makes me want to go have a hot dog! LOL. NOT!
[bea kunz] 1:43 pm: so a large plastic sheet or a glass cove if you have one...works great...if you do this, then you don.t have to water it so often...it doesn't need to be "wet" just moist
[Sandy Morgan] 1:43 pm: yck
[hlhixon] 1:44 pm: wonderful.... I'm well on my way!
[bea kunz] 1:44 pm: I'd rather eat the compost...JK Ginger
[GingerMarks] 1:44 pm: Bea do you turn yours?
[hlhixon] 1:44 pm: How long approximately does it take for your heap to turn into functioning compost?
[bea kunz] 1:44 pm: about every two weeks...
[bea kunz] 1:45 pm: you know you don't have to wait until it is fully composted to use it...it will continue to break down in the garden
[hlhixon] 1:45 pm: that's fast. Thanks.
[bea kunz] 1:46 pm: kinda depends on what you have in it and how you treat it...4 to 6 weeks is plenty time
[bea kunz] 1:46 pm: two weeks is how often I turn it Holly
[Annette] 1:47 pm: So, do you just put it on top of the soil that is already in the garden? He has already planted the seeds and mixing it in would unearth them.
[bea kunz] 1:47 pm: sometimes I take my peels, etc., and just work them directly into the beds.
[Sandy Morgan] 1:47 pm: ty bea, gotta go
[KimE] 1:47 pm: need to take off, thanks so much Bea and Ginger, been great!
[bea kunz] 1:48 pm: Thanks Sandy...hope you enjoyed it
[bea kunz] 1:48 pm: Love you Kim....be safe!
[Under the Waterfall]: KimE has left at 1:48 pm
[Under the Waterfall]: Sandy Morgan has left at 1:49 pm
[bea kunz] 1:49 pm: Just a little tip for your well being...
[bea kunz] 1:50 pm: do you know that oregano is 40% higher in antioxidants than blueberry's?
[bea kunz] 1:52 pm: when making a fresh salad, pick whatever herbs you have growing and toss a handful into the salad bowl...not only does it give you a special Zingy taste...it is so good for you>
[teresa] 1:52 pm: yummo, I really love salads
[teresa] 1:53 pm: I put TONS of stuff on my salad and I did start putting oregano and rosemary in my salad and it was very yummy to add these things
[GingerMarks] 1:53 pm: I used to love salads, but hubby has stones so can't eat them anymore due to the oxilates.
[GingerMarks] 1:53 pm: so only get salad when Teresa & I meet at Sweet Tomatos. LOL
[bea kunz] 1:54 pm: Annette, you can't do it after planting seed...wait until they are growing well, then just work it into the soil around the plants.....depends on what ir is, you wouldn't put really large clumpy things in the garden..but eggshell, grinds, and small peels work fine
[teresa] 1:54 pm: my hubby isn't much of a salad lover but I still buy the stuff for salads because I really love them
[bea kunz] 1:55 pm: hubby and I eat different things everyday....go for it Ginger
[GingerMarks] 1:55 pm: we do too, sept for dinner
[GingerMarks] 1:56 pm: he eats healthy, I eat chocolate
[GingerMarks] 1:56 pm: lol
[bea kunz] 1:56 pm: well dinner is the only meal we eat together..I love fish and seafood and he won't touch it with a long pole...so...
[Annette] 1:56 pm: I had no idea about oregano. And here I thought that the red wines are what were so healthy about Italian food LOL :p
[GingerMarks] 1:56 pm: ooooo me too!
[GingerMarks] 1:57 pm: Annette is stealth
[bea kunz] 1:57 pm: lightly cooked shrimp in olive oil with a good sprinkling of dill...yummy
